This Week’s Weigh-In
The concept of losing weight should be simple, eat less, move more and POOF - new body. Obviously we live in reality and know weight-loss can be much more complex than that.
Sure, you’ve got a routine you try to keep up to stay healthy. But you’ve also got your family, your work, and the thing you like to do on the weekend that allows you to hide from everyone.
This is where cracks in the routine can rear their ugly head.
And most of the time you’re probably not even aware of these cracks.
You’re not the only one sabotaging yourself though. As you’ll see below, there’s a lot of things we do that might just be your a-ha moments for why the scale isn’t moving as quick as you thought it should.
Don’t want to hear from us?
Yes, make a conscious effort to eat clean and make better choices when it comes to meals and snacks. Just know that even the healthy stuff can have a negative impact on your caloric intake.
Take olive oil, for instance - depending on how much you drizzle on a salad, that can be at least an extra 100+ calories right there.
Healthy drinks like smoothies? Check the sugar content of those bad boys, fruit drinks are notorious for being high in sugar and calories.
Even just innocently finishing off your kid’s leftovers is all extra calories that you probably didn’t even think of. Because you were thinking of how much they waste food!
THINKING EXERCISE IS A SILVER BULLET
Exercise is absolutely helpful for anyone’s weight-loss journey but it’s not the be all, end all.
A lot of guys overestimate how many calories they actually burn at the gym and then end up eating more than they should post workout.
It’s like this psychological game we play with ourselves where, just because we went to the gym, we feel like we can come home and eat whatever we see in the fridge.
Regardless of how much you’re exercising, maintain healthy limits on all those things you think you can eat after you exercise *cough* entire bags of chips *cough*.
This way you don’t have to worry about how many calories you burned in the gym because you know you’re already set with your nutrition limits anyway.
PERFECTION OVER CONSISTENCY
We’re guys, we aren’t perfect anyway! Aiming for perfection within your weight-loss journey is a recipe for burn out and disaster...okay, maybe it’s not that harsh, but burn out is a real thing when you’re so focused on anything in life.
This is why cheat meals exist.
A slip up here or there isn’t going to hurt your progress if you stay on track for the long run.
Ate something outside of your diet? Let it go and move on.
Feeling like you’re not “on” today? That’s fine, you can be on tomorrow.
Consistency loses the weight, not perfection.
EVEN WHEN IT’S WORKING, WATCH OUT
As the ball starts rolling and the pounds start to shed, the leaner you get, the less calories you need.
A smaller body will burn fewer calories, which means you may not even realize the routine you had to get to your current point is now actually the thing maintaining you at the same weight and body size.
Check your caloric intake regularly so you can see if you’re coming up against a plateau.
The last thing you want to have happen is seeing progress in your weight loss journey and then all of the sudden your routine isn’t doing it anymore.
With routines and smarter, healthier choices outweighing your unhealthy, greasy, yet tasty, choices, turn your goal achievement on autopilot.
When how you lost the weight is added to the list of things you can’t remember that your wife asked you, you know you’ve been consistent enough.
